There were tears of joy aplenty as a Husky, previously stolen, was reunited with his family after an absence of two years.
Semper, the Siberian Husky, was joyfully reunited with his owner, Kameroun Mares, although his journey back home was lengthy and challenging.
In 2013, while undergoing chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Kameroun acquired Semper as a young puppy. She bestowed upon him the name Semper Fidelis, which translates to “Always faithful” in Latin. However, a few years into her treatment, an unimaginable event occurred.
In 2016, Kameroun ventured from Florida to California, entrusting Semper’s care to her then roommate. Unfortunately, while she was away, she received the distressing news that Semper had disappeared.
Despite extensive searching, the Husky had disappeared without a trace. Determined, she continued her search even while residing in California, utilizing online platforms and persistently contacting rescues and shelters across Florida. Her hope was that someone would locate Semper and have his microchip scanned, as he had been implanted with one.
She sought additional assistance from Ana Campos, a private investigator, who uncovered something peculiar. Kameroun had registered Semper with AKC Reunite, a microchip-related service.
“About a year into this ordeal, someone suggested that Kameroun recheck Semper’s AKC Reunite chip. So, in May 2017, she visited the local humane society, where they conducted an online check… It was then that she discovered an unexpected revelation. On April 11, 2016, a woman had added her name to Semper’s chip,” Campos shared with The Dodo.
The other microchip company had neglected to verify if Semper’s chip already had a registered owner. Campos delved deeper and unearthed that someone had listed Semper for sale on Craigslist for $200. This explained why Kameroun had been unable to locate him; he had been “flipped.”
According to Campos, it was Kameroun’s former roommate who had sold Semper. “He was stolen and sold by her roommate 2 1/2 years ago,” Campos posted on Facebook. “She was informed that he was lost on April 30, 2016. However, on April 11, 2016, the buyer added their name to his AKC Reunite ‘registered chip.’ They subsequently registered this already registered chip on Petkey pets.”
After involving a lawyer, the court ruled in Kameroun’s favor, leading to the retrieval of Semper from the person who had purchased him and his subsequent return to Kameroun.
Finally, after 2.5 years of relentless searching and unwavering hope, Kameroun was on the verge of being reunited with Semper. A video capturing this emotional moment can be seen here.
Kameroun shared that Semper still remembers the commands she taught him and is adapting well to his new home in California. “I see him as an extension of myself and my heart,” Kameroun expressed. “I am delighted to have him back in my embrace.”
