Hippos rank as the second largest terrestrial animals, surpassed only by elephants. These captivating mammals can reach weights of up to 3,200kg. They frequently immerse themselves in water to stay cool during scorching days.
According to National Geographic, “Their eyes, nose, and ears are positioned atop their heads, enabling them to see and breathe even when submerged. Additionally, these fascinating beings excrete a reddish oily substance that serves as both a skin protectant against dryness and a form of sunblock!”
Hippos demonstrate remarkable swimming abilities. “Despite their immense size, hippos excel at swimming and can hold their breath underwater for up to five minutes. Their ears and nostrils automatically close while submerged to prevent water entry.”
Rarely do we have the opportunity to observe baby hippos engaging in their adorable antics. However, this particular video is undoubtedly one that I could replay endlessly! Obi, a young Pygmy hippo, ventured into the expansive pool alongside his mother, Petre, for the very first time at Melbourne Zoo in Australia. Obi, which signifies “heart” in the Nigerian lobo language, is unquestionably melting our hearts too!!
Witness as they, together with their mother, embark on a brief stroll into the water to revel in their surroundings. Despite it being Obi’s inaugural experience in the expansive pool, he displays remarkable fearlessness. Without a moment’s hesitation, he ventures in and proves himself to be an adept little swimmer! Naturally, his mother remains closely by his side, attentively watching over him. The most endearing moment occurs when he swims beneath his mom, peeking his tiny head out. Adorable and affectionate, he truly captivates our hearts!
Watch Obi explore the water in the video below.
