Leucistic reindeer, also known as white deer, are rare and make up less than one percent of the deer population. Moreover, in snowy conditions, it can be challenging to spot a white animal like a white deer. However, this fortunate photographer had a mesmerizing experience while hiking in Norway, encountering a magical sight of a white reindeer.
Mads Nordsveen has traveled extensively, capturing breathtaking landscapes and natural marvels around the world. However, amidst all the wonders he has seen, it was a simple, pure being that caught his attention and left an indelible impression on the photographer’s mind.
One morning, he was trekking with companions on the northern Norwegian island of Senja when they came across a young reindeer calf, as white as the snow that covered the ground around them.
The young reindeer appeared almost invisible in the snow on that gorgeous morning. If not for its dark eyes and bone-colored antlers protruding into the air, the calf could have been mistaken for another snowdrift.
A few hundred yards away, a brown reindeer that Nordsveen assumed to be the calf’s mother stood and gazed at them, prompting everyone to stay still. They sat in silence, remaining as calm as possible, until eventually, they approached the calf closely.
The young reindeer stayed for approximately five minutes before running back to its mother, and they disappeared into the forest. Those five minutes were ample time for the photographer to tap into his artistic instincts.
The native Sami people, many of whom herd reindeer in northern Norway, informed Nordsveen that white reindeer are extremely rare and are believed to bring good fortune. Perhaps, this fortunate man would cherish the enchanting moment for the remainder of his life.
Nordsveen also has an impressive collection of photographs capturing encounters with wild animals during his travels. It is understandable that the more time you spend in nature and wildlife habitats, the higher the chances of encountering these majestic creatures.
