Michael Joy experienced every dog owner’s worst nightmare in 2016 when his three beloved dogs ran away and vanished.
Although two of the dogs eventually returned, Sam, a 4-month-old Labrador mix, remained missing. Despite Michael’s exhaustive search of every local animal shelter, Sam could not be found.
“I’m determined to find this puppy,” Michael assured his wife. He diligently monitored the shelters’ websites, hoping for any sign of Sam. His determination never wavered, and he continued his search without pause.
Michael and his family eventually moved to Kentucky, but his unwavering belief that Sam was alive and well never wavered. He regularly visited their previous home in Georgia, hoping to find Sam there.
Despite nearly five years of searching, Michael was still unable to locate Sam.
Then, one day, Michael received an unexpected call from City Dogs Cleveland.
“We have Sam,” the voice on the other end said. Michael couldn’t believe it. “This can’t be the same Sam!” he thought to himself, in a mix of surprise and joy.
“It’s Ohio, folks! It’s practically in Michigan!”
“Can you provide a description of him?” I asked eagerly. “Where are you located, and when can I come to pick him up?” I inquired after she mentioned, “He’s a dog with lighter-colored fur.”
Sam had received a medical examination at the shelter, and during the scanning process, they discovered his microchip. This led them to track him down to the Joys.
Then, one day, Michael received a call from City Dogs Cleveland.
On the same day, Michael made an eight-hour journey to Ohio, hoping that Sam might still recognize him. Over the years, both Michael and Sam had undergone significant transformations.
As they went to the top, you could see the excitement on Michael’s face. “I was like a kid at Christmas,” he exclaimed.
Sam shared in Michael’s excitement, bouncing all over his dad and wagging his tail nonstop.
Get tissues ready for this one…Sam was dropped off by police who found him. Kennel staff scanned & found a #microchip then contacted the number on file. Turns out, Sam was missing for 4 YEARS, from Georgia! His owner drove 8hrs to get Sam in an emotional #reunion.☺️#happyending pic.twitter.com/kGtaeN4iX1

Michael will definitely be keeping Sam close and not letting him out of his sight anytime soon, that’s for sure.
