The town of Heart’s Delight in Newfoundland, Canada came together to rescue a pod of dolphins that were trapped in sea ice and rocks.
On March 10, 2023, over 20 dolphins were seen stuck along the shoreline, crying out for help. The residents of the town sprang into action, with Barb Parsons-Sooley among those who rushed to help. They brought ATVs, backhoes, and other vehicles, along with ropes and tools to aid in freeing the dolphins. Some even braved the frigid waters to assist in the rescue effort.
A family recorded a video of what they witnessed after hurrying down to the site to check if they could be of any assistance. The mother of the family mentioned, “After my husband, our kids, and I found out about the trapped dolphins, we decided to go there to see if there was anything we could do to help. Upon our arrival, a few of them had already been saved by the Department of Fisheries [of Canada] and some local citizens. We stayed there and observed while more of them were being rescued.”
“Regrettably, two of the dolphins perished and two were taken by truck to a neighboring community where there was no ice. The one featured in the video was one of the ones moved to a nearby community,” she states. “The other dolphins were able to flee the ice with some assistance from the DFO and reached safety in the sea.”
