In the timeless words of Kermit the Frog, it’s quite challenging to exist as a newborn white German Shepherd dog while being green.
When Shana Stamey of Canton, North Carolina, witnessed her white German Shepherd entering the stage of labor last Friday, she believed she was fully prepared for any unexpected occurrences. The dog named Gypsy efficiently delivered a litter of eight robust puppies. The birth proceeded without any complications, and all the puppies were in good health. However, one particular pup distinguished itself from the others.
The puppy emerged with a lime green hue, causing Shana to experience a moment of surprise. As this was Gypsy’s inaugural litter, the presence of the green pup caught her off guard. She promptly conducted research and verified that the puppy was in good health but had come into contact with a substance known as meconium, commonly found in the amniotic sac.
Meconium refers to a viscous, dark green substance that essentially constitutes the initial fecal matter of the puppy. Meconium is composed of substances ingested while the puppy is in the womb, encompassing intestinal epithelial cells, lanugo, mucus, amniotic fluid, bile, and water.
While it is unusual for the substance to cause a puppy’s coloration to turn green, it is not unprecedented and poses no harm whatsoever. This occurrence is most commonly observed on light-colored fur, as is the case here.
Thankfully, with a few cleaning sessions from the mother, the color will gradually diminish, and the puppy will eventually resemble its equally adorable siblings. Shana decided to name the little puppy Hulk, inspired by its distinctive shade and its initial display of intense emotions during birth.
Irrespective of the color, Gypsy is an excellent mother, and the green puppy is incredibly endearing. Eventually, Shana will seek loving homes for all of her puppies.
