In the video, a group of hippos is seen protecting their territory by confronting and chasing away a lion.
The lion is often known as the “king of the jungle” due to its formidable power and strength. In the wild, other animals typically show fear when a lion roars. However, a recent viral video challenges this perception. Shared on Latest Sightings’ YouTube Channel, the video shows a group of hippos surrounding and confronting a lion that is stranded on a rock in the middle of a river in Kruger National Park. One of the hippos charges at the lion, causing it to jump into the water and swim towards the bank. As the lion swims, it encounters another hippo hiding beneath the water’s surface.

The video depicts a lion perched atop a rock in the middle of a river, with no known explanation for how it got there. Soon, a group of hippos approaches the lion, encircling the rock. Suddenly, one of the hippos charges aggressively at the lion, prompting the big cat to jump into the water in an attempt to escape the wrath of the angry hippos. In the end, another hippo makes an attempt to go after the lion, but the lion manages to flee quickly.
Since being shared on March 14, the video has garnered 17 lakh views and over 500 comments. One user expressed amazement at nature’s dynamics, saying, “Nature never ceases to amaze me! It’s fascinating to witness the dynamic interactions between different species, even if it can be intense at times.” Another commented on the lion’s escape, stating, “WOW. That lion was like, okay I’m leaving and the hippo is like NOT FAST ENOUGH. It’s a shame we missed some of what happened prior, notice the edit. How the heck did the lion end up there?” A third commented on the unpredictability of nature, saying, “The animal kingdom never ceases to amaze us. Witnessing a role reversal where hippos attack a lion is a testament to the unpredictability of nature.” A fourth added, “The concept of ‘king of the jungle’ is derived by humans for animals and not by animals themselves. In the wild, everybody lives by the edge of the sword. Every predator is being hunted by a bigger one.”
According to the BBC, hippos are the world’s deadliest large land mammal, responsible for an estimated 500 human deaths per year in Africa. Known for their aggression and sharp teeth, hippos spend most of their time submerged in water to keep their skin cool and moist, typically inhabiting areas with abundant water sources.
