Wildlife is full of extraordinary moments of tension, but it’s rare to capture them on film. Emmanuel Sauti, a 53-year-old safari guide, recently witnessed and filmed an encounter between a crocodile and an elephant.
Sauti recounted the scene where he observed the elephant retaliating against a crocodile that had bitten its tail while crossing a river. He shared with LatestSightings.com, “We were driving back to camp after our off days, just a routine drive or so we thought. Little did we know that we were about to witness a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. As we passed by the Luangwa River, we noticed some commotion taking place in the water below.”
“As the events unfolded, we could clearly identify the participants: an elephant and a crocodile! I couldn’t help but experience a mixture of emotions. On one hand, I felt a bit concerned for the crocodile. After all, have you seen how massive elephants can become?!”
“In the end, the elephant successfully freed itself from the grip of the crocodile and crossed the river,” shared Sauti. “Phew, what a relief! I must say, that was one of the most thrilling moments in my career as a safari guide. And the fact that it was my first time witnessing an elephant engage in a battle with a crocodile made it even more extraordinary.”
“I was absolutely ecstatic to witness such a rare event,” Sauti added with enthusiasm. “And let me tell you, it was a sight to behold!”
“As a safari guide, I’ve had my fair share of incredible wildlife sightings, but this one truly stands out,” he continued. “It’s not every day that you have the opportunity to witness an elephant fighting a crocodile. These sightings are precious and few, and moments like these make me appreciate the job I have.”
According to LatestSightings.com, it is “extremely rare” for a crocodile to attempt to kill an elephant. They speculate that the crocodile was either overly ambitious or exceptionally hungry.
The video, released a few days ago, has already amassed over 10 million views.
One viewer summed up the encounter by stating, “It’s the perfect example of ‘biting off more than you can chew!'”
Another viewer remarked, “The crocodile was cunning. Releasing its grip before they reached the shore was a wise move. Not everyone can immediately recognize the disastrous consequences a massive meal like that could bring to their day.”
