A 13-year-old white German shepherd was saved by this 93-year-old Navy veteran just a few days before the senior dog was scheduled to be euthanized by a shelter in Arizona.
It’s incomprehensible how a stunning, white German shepherd could be deserted by his family at the age of 13, but that is the unfortunate reality for Sam. Sam was devastated by the abandonment and had very little hope of finding a new home.
However, destiny had different intentions for Sam. Luckily, Sam had caught the interest of a rescue organization in Orange County, and that’s how George Johnson became aware of the dog’s difficult situation. All it took to save the pup was a simple phone call.
You see, George had a special affection for German shepherds, particularly the ones with white fur. Therefore, when his cherished white German shepherd passed away, he contacted the Orange Country rescue to inquire if they had a white shepherd available for adoption.
They didn’t have a white canine available for George, but they were aware of Sam and provided him with information on where to find the pup. To George’s delight, when he expressed his desire to adopt the senior dog, volunteers made the journey to Arizona, picked up Sam, and brought him back to Orange County.
George was overjoyed to become the proud guardian of Sam, stating, “Just what I need, two old dogs together.” He even expressed an interest in uncovering information about Sam’s previous owner and the circumstances that led the gentle old pup to end up in a shelter.
He discovered that Sam’s previous owner had raised him from a young age but had to part ways when he joined the Navy and couldn’t provide for Sam anymore. Being a retired Navy veteran himself, George felt a deep sense of responsibility and made a commitment to care for Sam for the remainder of his days.
George has developed a deep affection for Sam, noting that he has never encountered a dog quite like him. Surprisingly, Sam doesn’t have an interest in playing with balls or squeaky toys. According to George, Sam is special simply because he’s alive, and he cherishes spending his days by George’s side.
George is aware that Sam, being a shepherd, is advanced in age and beyond his prime. Nevertheless, George is fully dedicated to providing care for Sam for as long as he chooses to remain in this world by his side. The two will continue to be steadfast companions, relishing in the bond of their friendship.
