A utility worker in Wilcox, Arizona came across a situation where a brown bear was trapped atop a utility pole. Without delay, he contacted his supervisor to request assistance. Consequently, Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Co-op dispatched Apprentice Lineman Gallego and Lineman Warner Newbauer to aid in the bear’s rescue.
The bear’s life was genuinely endangered due to the presence of 7200 volts on the nearby power lines. Direct contact with any electrical line would have proven fatal. To mitigate this risk, the worker promptly shut off the power supply to the lines before proceeding to assist the bear. Employing their boom truck, they carefully approached the bear.
Newbauer initiated communication with the bear when he approached within a distance of six feet. Remarkably, he managed to encourage the bear to descend by utilizing an eight-foot fiberglass pole. While this approach may not have been ideal for the bear’s well-being, it effectively achieved the desired outcome. The dedicated efforts of these workers undoubtedly rescued the bear from an imminent fatality.
