The bear in the video named Tuffy, who endured years of confinement in a small crate at a bear bile farm, is seen happily playing in water in the following footage.
After being rescued, Tuffy now resides at Animals Asia’s sanctuary in Vietnam. Bear bile farms inflict severe harm to bears, extracting bile from their gallbladders for use in traditional Chinese medicines.
Fortunately, Tuffy’s damaged gallbladder was surgically removed. Additionally, he arrived at the sanctuary with cracked, dry paws, and three fractured teeth.
But the footage demonstrates Tuffy’s immense joy in his newfound life. The black bear enthusiastically leaps and frolics in the pool. Louise Ellis, Bear Manager at Animals Asia, remarked that for Tuffy, who was deprived of water for years, experiencing it now is akin to quenching a long-standing thirst in a genuine oasis.
Bear bile is a component of the multi-million-dollar bear trade. Regrettably, there are more than 10,000 bears confined in bile farms in China, and over 1,200 bears in similar farms in Vietnam.
Fortunately, Animals Asia has managed to rescue approximately 600 bears since its establishment in 1998. The organization operates two sanctuaries, one in China and the other in Vietnam.
Last year, Lesley Nicol, star of Downton Abbey, visited China to witness the efforts of Animals Asia in putting an end to the bear bile trade.
