All dogs in the world who live in shelters wish to have a family. But there is a sad reality that humans often adopt pets based on their appearances, so the hope of finding a forever home may take longer for some older dogs who do not fit the traditional definition of “cute.”
However, every dog deserves love and a forever home, just like this dog that patiently waited for years to find his family and finally had his wish granted.
This is Wally the affectionate Pitbull who doesn’t resemble your typical dog, but he has had a challenging life and now all he desires is some affection and attention.
When Wally was taken to the Town of Islip Animal Shelter on Long Island, New York, he was a homeless wanderer and nearly 10 years old.
He was dealing with some health concerns, including blindness in one eye and a skin infection, according to reports from The Dodo. All of this gave the unfortunate dog an appearance that concerned the shelter staff, as they were worried he might never find a forever home.
However, the dog proved to have an incredible personality and quickly became the beloved favorite among the shelter staff.
“He enjoys slobbering on you and will do anything for food,” said veterinary tech Danielle Gorle to The Dodo. “He also likes to just hang out and relax.”
“Wally is an extraordinary dog with the demeanor of a walrus/hippo/rhino who simply needs a loving home to spend his golden years in!” wrote Jen, a volunteer at the shelter, on Facebook.
“He’s a cuddly mush and a favorite among volunteers.”
Unfortunately, many visitors couldn’t see past the dog’s appearance, and he had to wait for a year to find a home due to his need to be the only animal in the household.
The shelter staff observed that not being adopted was starting to take a toll on his well-being.
“He appears to be declining,” said Gorle. “He was happier when he first arrived. He enjoys going out, but he seems to be depressed in his kennel.”
But fortunately, Wally’s story has a happy ending.
A month after he gained popularity online and we initially reported on him, the shelter announced that Wally had finally found his forever home.
“He is resting comfortably and appears to be in good health!” the shelter wrote.
We are thrilled for the kind, furry companion, as every dog deserves to be loved and cared for.
