This lovely household in Arizona is home to a donkey who brings immense joy and love to his owners.
Introducing Walter – a small donkey who shares his living space with his mom, dad, and three German Shepherds. Having grown up amidst a pack of dogs, it’s no wonder that Walter has adopted some of their canine behaviors. However, regardless of his personality, his parents adore him just the way he is.
Walter was a mere baby when Kelly and Brad Blake welcomed him into their loving home in Oatman, Arizona.
“We have wild burros that roam the town,” Brad told The Dodo. “Walter’s mama rejected him because she was too young. The Bureau of Land Management and town locals tried for 10 hours to get Walter’s mama to accept him. Nothing was working, so we were called and asked if we would like to adopt him. Of course, we said yes!”
The decision to bring the donkey into their lives brought immense happiness to the Blakes. The moment they showed him affection, an instant bond was formed between Walter and his new parents, especially with his dad.
It didn’t take long for him to settle into his new home, surrounded by dogs and his two caring caregivers.
Walter used to be frail, but now he has grown to be 150 pounds. He lives in the Blakes’ home as if he were one of their large dogs.
The couple noticed that whenever Walter needs assistance, his canine siblings are always there to show him the ropes.
“We have three German Shepherds and they all took to baby Walter from day one,” Brad said. “They have helped us raise him and teach him household manners.”
The dogs had a significant influence on Walter’s behavior. He acts like a puppy when he’s excited and even sleeps like one. But Walter’s dog-like nature truly shines when Brad returns home from a business trip.
As soon as Walter sees his dad, he comes bounding towards him and wags his cute little tail. He hops around Brad and nuzzles him, showing him how much he missed him while he was away.
“Walter acts like he’s a dog,” Brad said. “He wags his tail and gets excited when we come home. He hops and rubs his body against me for affection. He even curls up on the couch next to me for naps.”
If you see Walter in person, you might mistake him for a dog trapped inside a donkey’s body!
“Every night we all go on our walk into the desert for exercise and Walter runs around with our German Shepherds as if he’s one of the pack,” Brad shared.
Brad and Kelly also assist their donkey in becoming a valuable member of the community. He collaborates with several charities and volunteers as an emotional support donkey.
Due to his adorable appearance and charming personality, Walter has garnered a large following on Facebook, and his parents make sure to keep his fans updated on his latest escapades. They are proud that Walter has brought attention to their small town.
“We never imagined how much Walter would positively impact our lives,” Brad said.
