A homeowner in San Manuel, Arizona, arrived home after work and was astonished to find a bobcat in her dog’s bed, snuggled up and her dog, Squeakers, nowhere to be seen.
It seems that the bobcat entered the home through an unlocked doggy door and claimed Squeakers’ bed on Monday, March 6th. The homeowner quickly contacted the Arizona Game and Fish Department after taking a few photos of the bobcat lounging in the bed.
The bobcat doesn’t appear to be too pleased about being interrupted from its nap. By the time the wildlife officers arrived, the bobcat had already fled. The department tweeted, “A bobcat lounges on a dog bed in San Manuel home Mon. The homeowner, who found it upon returning from work, suspects it entered through an unlocked doggie door. The bobcat escaped before an officer arrived. Don’t handle entrapped/hurt wildlife yourself. Call 623-236-7201 ASAP.”
While it may be an unusual sight for the general public to see a bobcat in a dog’s bed, it was not a funny story for Squeakers. The poor dog was found badly mauled by the wild cat the next day. It seems he must have run away after being injured by the cat and forced out of his bed. His owner shared a photo on Instagram and wrote (from Squeaker’s perspective): “Thank you for all your concerns. The staff at Veterinary Specialty Center Tucson did an amazing job patching me up after I encountered the bobcat.”

Based on the photos, Squeaker’s hind legs appear to be severely scratched and bitten. Squeakers is currently resting at home in his new dog bed and is improving each day, as per his family. A subsequent post reads, “As an update, I’m relaxing in my new bed and taking it easy while I recover.”

He’s also enjoying some time outdoors in the sunshine and taking walks.

Squeaker’s family created a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for his care, with any excess funds being donated to animal charities.

Bobcats are safeguarded in 10 states as a protected species. As per the department’s official website, “Bobcats may seek shelter in various places such as rooftops, attics, patios, and the space beneath decks. Other small spaces like planters, rubbish piles, sheds, and more can also serve as attractive dens for them.” Bobcats are typically drawn to dense brush, shaded areas, and unoccupied yards where they may rest during the day or enjoy basking in the sun.
The department advises individuals to promptly contact their county animal control office if they encounter a bobcat up close or find one in their home.
