What an incredible sight to behold.
When driving through a rural, forested area, it’s common to see various types of animals, from small birds and squirrels to large deer.
While encountering these creatures may not be particularly noteworthy, on occasion, you may come across something out of the ordinary, something truly massive.
That’s precisely what occurred in Wyoming when sightseers observed a mother grizzly bear and her four cubs crossing a roadway. Fortunately, the entire event was captured on video.
It was a usual day for vacationers at Grand Teton National Park as they appreciated the stunning scenery and the wildlife that the park has to offer.
As it turns out, bears are a relatively common inhabitant of the Grand Teton National Park – to such an extent that the park’s website informs us that:
‘Black bears and grizzly bears thrive in Grand Teton National Park and the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway. You may encounter a bear anywhere at anytime. Some of the most popular trails pass through excellent bear habitat. Bears will usually move out of the way if they hear you approaching.’
But nonetheless, when visitors saw a mother bear and her cubs crossing a road right before their eyes, they understood they were experiencing an extraordinary event.
In a video shared by one of the onlookers, the mother bear can be seen leading her cubs down a grassy hill towards the road.
Understanding that the mother is aiming to cross, everyone stops their vehicles and steps outside, cameras prepared.
The mother bear advances confidently onto the road with her cubs, showing no sign of being aware of the many people who are observing them.
She maintains her course, focused on her goal of getting her cubs across safely, and does not even cast a glance towards her onlookers!
The bears safely make it to the other side of the road and the protective mother leads her cubs towards the safety of the forest.
It’s fascinating that the mother bear doesn’t show any signs of aggression towards the spectators, who maintain a respectful distance.
The four adorable cubs stick close to their mother and one can tell that they are a bit apprehensive about crossing the road, but they trust their mother to protect them.
If you ever have the opportunity to witness bears crossing a road, it’s important to keep yourself and the bears safe. Teton National Park provides the following guidelines:
- Keep a distance of at least 100 yards from bears, even if you’re in a vehicle.
- Use designated pullouts to view bears and stay with your vehicle.
- Follow the instructions of National Park Service Staff.
- Use binoculars or spotting scopes for safe viewing.
- Approaching wildlife is against the law.
- Do not leave food, garbage, or coolers in the open bed of a truck or the exterior of any vehicle.
It’s wonderful that the tourists were able to witness and document this incredible moment with the mama bear and her cubs. It’s a great reminder of how amazing nature can be.
